The new Thomas Sullivan Magnum is here, portrayed by Jay Hernandez, and he’s got charm, just like the first one did. For most of the country, tonight will be the first time the gets seen, but for a lucky few that were able to watch on Waikiki beach ten days ago.
The new incarnation is up to date with the film industry technology of today and will provide action/adventure at satisfying levels. Also not to be forgotten is the absolute beaty the Hawaiian islands offer the viewer. This is the first time in a very long time that two primetime series set in Hawaii are being filmed and aired at the same time.
As a live-in guest of adventure writer, Robin Masters, Hernandez’s Magnum is always on a case and is usually getting help from his buddies Orville ‘Rick’ Wright (Zachary Knighton) and Theodore ‘TC’ Calvin (Stephen Hill). The fellas get along famously. Masters estate caretaker Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks) and her dobermans Zeus and Apollo are a thorn in Magnum’s side but also a friend when needed, except the dogs, they really don’t like him.
Executive Producer, Peter M. Lenkov has done a great service, judging by the first episode, to the return of the beloved 80’s series with it’s current world updates. The
show also runs in the same universe as Hawaii Five-O and will have some crossover, most notably with the Medical Examiner Dr. Noelani Cunha (Castle High Alum, Kimee Balmilero) character being active in both series.
The cast feels like it’s gotten along very well, chuckling and commenting during the airing in Waikiki. A fun group for sure. Let’s hope to get to 200 episodes and beyond like Hawaii Five-O has with the start of their ninth season. It helps the visitor industry and provides countless work for local entertainers.
