Devone Bess has been arrested in his suburban Phoenix home after a standoff with Police. The charges are one felony count each of endangerment, unlawful flight and failure to stop for a police officer. Apparently Bess was mimicking firing a gun with his fingers at officers while driving without his headlights on. He also showed a knife.
Documents state that Bess went home refusing police commands and went inside the house. SWAT later entered the home with a warrant and arrested Bess.
Bess played on the famed Hawaii Sugar Bowl team in 2007. He went undrafted in the 2008 NFL Draft before signing a free agent deal with the Miami Dolphins where he played five seasons and led the team in receiving in 2009. After a trade he played one final season with the Cleveland Browns in 2013.
Bess had trouble as a youth lost a scholarship with Oregon State. After serving time in a youth facility he was given a second chance in Hawaii. Under June Jones he thrived and became an upstanding citizen with an incredible work ethic earning the love and respect of the community.
In January 2014, Bess was arrested on charges of assaulting an officer at the Fort Lauderdale airport. This came after some questionable Twitter posts of marijuana and nudity. It also spelled the end of his football career.
Though not officially documented or diagnosed publicly, some fans and teammates express concern in social media that Bess may be battling issues likely brought on by the physical nature of football. CTE has been a major topic of concern over the last half decade in the NFL.
